A digital piano may only be 27 cm deep.
That does not mean you only need 27 cm of room.
The dimensions on a product page describe the instrument itself. They do not include the stand, music rest, pedals, chair or bench — or the person sitting at the piano.
So before buying a digital piano or choosing where to place it, it helps to think about the complete playing footprint, not just the dimensions of the keyboard.
The short answer
Many compact 88-key portable digital pianos are approximately 128–133 cm wide and 26–35 cm deep.
Here are a few popular examples:

Always check the exact specifications for your own model before planning the space.
And remember: those numbers describe only the piano.
A complete setup also needs room for:
- the stand or frame
- the music rest
- cables
- pedals
- a chair or piano bench
- your knees and feet
- enough space to sit down and get up comfortably
As a broad planning reference, Yamaha suggests allowing an area of around 150 × 150 cm for an 88-key digital piano and seated player.
That does not mean every compact digital piano requires a square of exactly that size. It is better understood as a useful starting point before measuring your exact piano, stand and playing position.
1. How wide is an 88-key digital piano?
Width is the dimension you have the least freedom to reduce.
A full-size 88-key keyboard has to accommodate 88 keys, so compact instruments from different manufacturers tend to be relatively similar in width.
For example:
- Roland FP-10: 128.4 cm
- Roland FP-30X: 130.0 cm
- Yamaha P-225: 132.6 cm
That makes roughly 130–135 cm of wall width a useful starting assumption for many portable 88-key digital pianos.
But treat that as a planning estimate, not a buying measurement.
A piano that technically fits into a 133 cm space may still feel cramped if it sits directly between a bookshelf and a curtain, beside a radiator or where a nearby door needs to open.
Measure the actual location, not just the piano.
2. How deep is a digital piano?
Depth varies more than width.
The Roland FP-10 is only 25.8 cm deep without its music rest. The Yamaha P-225 measures 27.2 cm. Larger portable models can extend beyond 30 cm.
A difference of five or eight centimetres may sound insignificant on a specification sheet.
In a narrow bedroom, hallway or living room, it can make a noticeable difference to how the space feels.
This is why width alone does not tell you whether a piano will work in a room.
Two 88-key instruments can occupy almost the same length of wall while projecting quite differently into the room.
3. Remember the music rest — and what sits behind the piano
The music rest is one of the easiest dimensions to forget.
Manufacturers often list different dimensions with and without it.
For example, the Yamaha P-225 measures 27.2 cm deep without its music rest and approximately 36.2 cm with it installed.
The Roland FP-10 similarly becomes deeper when its music rest is fitted.
If you normally play from sheet music, a tablet or a book, measure the piano in the configuration you will actually use.
Also check what happens behind the instrument.
Depending on the model, you may need room for:
- power cable
- pedal cable
- audio connections
- USB or MIDI connections
- music rest
- access to rear-facing ports
Avoid planning the piano so tightly against another surface that cables become bent, compressed or difficult to reach.
4. The stand is part of the footprint
The piano is only half of the measurement.
The stand determines not just where the instrument sits, but how the space underneath it can be used.
An X-stand has legs extending towards the floor.
A dedicated manufacturer stand normally uses side panels and a lower supporting structure.
A wall-mounted frame supports the piano without floor-standing legs.
Even with exactly the same piano on top, these setups interact with the room differently.

The important measurement rule is simple:
Measure the piano and its intended stand as one complete unit.
Do not assume the stand is the same depth as the instrument.
For example, a Yamaha P-225 is approximately 27.2 cm deep on its own and around 31.8 cm deep when installed on Yamaha’s optional dedicated L-200 stand.
A few centimetres may matter when the piano is going into a tight space.
5. The player usually needs more depth than the piano
This is the measurement people most often underestimate.
A digital piano can be less than 30 cm deep, but your body cannot fit inside those 30 cm.
You need space for:
- your knees
- your feet
- the pedals
- the bench or chair
- the distance between your body and the keyboard
You also need enough room to pull the seat back and get in and out comfortably.
That is why the real playing area can be dramatically deeper than the instrument itself.
When space is limited, do not stop after measuring the keyboard.
Put a chair where you expect to sit and physically test the position.
If the setup feels awkward before the piano arrives, it will probably feel awkward afterwards too.
6. Allow space for the pedals
A sustain pedal itself does not take up much room.
Its position matters much more.
Your foot should be able to reach it naturally while you remain centred at the keyboard.
If you use a three-pedal unit, the position is usually even more fixed.
This makes the area underneath the piano an important part of the overall setup.
Before choosing a location, think about where your:
- knees
- heels
- pedal unit
- stand structure
will all meet.
A setup can look spacious from across the room while feeling surprisingly crowded once you sit down to play.
7. What changes with a wall-mounted piano?
Wall mounting does not make an 88-key piano narrower.
And it does not necessarily make the complete setup physically shallower.
The spatial advantage is different: the supporting structure no longer occupies the floor underneath the instrument.

The frame therefore does not make the object itself shallower.
Instead, it changes how the surrounding space can be used.
The floor beneath the piano remains open, which can improve:
- visual openness
- legroom
- access for cleaning
- flexibility around the instrument
This can be particularly useful when the available room is valuable, even if the absolute depth of the piano remains similar.
8. The easiest way to test whether a piano will fit
You do not need interior-design software.
A tape measure and a roll of masking tape are enough.
Step 1: Find the exact piano dimensions
Use the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model you are considering.
Do not rely on the dimensions of a similar model.
Step 2: Measure the complete stand
If you already know which stand or frame you will use, find its maximum width and depth as well.
Step 3: Mark the footprint
Use masking tape to mark the width and depth on the floor.
This makes the numbers much easier to understand than reading them on a screen.
Step 4: Add your seat
Put your intended piano bench, stool or chair in front of the marked area.
Then sit down.
Step 5: Test the room as you would actually use it
Ask:
- Can I reach the pedals naturally?
- Is there enough room for my knees?
- Can I get in and out of the seat comfortably?
- Can another person walk past me?
- Can nearby doors, cupboards and drawers still open?
- Can the cables reach their connections without being stretched?
- Does the room still feel usable?
This simple test tells you far more than the piano’s dimensions alone.
Example: will a Roland FP-10 fit?
Imagine you are considering a Roland FP-10.
The piano itself is:
128.4 cm wide × 25.8 cm deep without its music rest.
You immediately know that a 120 cm-wide alcove is too small.
But a 130 cm-wide space is not automatically suitable either.
You still need to consider:
- the stand or frame
- music rest
- cables
- surrounding furniture
- your seated position
Then comes the more important question:
What happens in front of the piano?
Place your seat where you would actually play and test the space with your body in it.
There is an important difference between asking:
“Will the piano fit?”
and:
“Will this be comfortable enough that I actually want to play here?”
The second question is the one that matters.
Portable piano or furniture-style digital piano?
If space is one of your main constraints, portable digital pianos offer an interesting advantage: the instrument and its support can be considered separately.
Portable series such as the Roland FP and Yamaha P ranges can be combined with different types of stands depending on whether the priority is mobility or a more permanent home setup.
A furniture-style digital piano integrates the keyboard, stand and often the pedal unit into one fixed piece of furniture.
Neither approach is automatically better.
But if every centimetre matters, being able to choose the instrument and support separately gives you more control over the final footprint.
So how much space should you plan for?
For many compact 88-key portable digital pianos, a useful first assumption is approximately 130–135 cm of instrument width and approximately 26–35 cm of instrument depth.
But those numbers are only the beginning.
Add:
- the actual stand
- music rest
- cables
- pedals
- bench or chair
- your seated playing position
If you need a rough planning area before choosing a specific model, around 150 × 150 cm is a useful conservative starting point for an 88-key digital piano and seated player.
Once you know the exact piano and stand, measure the real setup instead.
The most space-efficient piano is not necessarily the model with the smallest number on the specification sheet.
It is the setup that uses your available room well while still making it comfortable and inviting to sit down and play.
